This is a very unusual and to a collector highly interesting Colt. This is a very scarce 1938 Colt 1911a1 U.S. Army Pistol that was rebuilt most likely prior to or in early WW2. There is an “AN” mark engraved on the left side of the frame that may be a rebuild marking. The pistol has been re-assembled into a 1911 configuration with a WW1 era Savage replacement slide, a flat mainspring housing and 1911 type grips which were likely what was on hand when this thing was overhauled. All of this points to a time where 1911a1 parts were not readily available which is in the very early 1939-1942 period. The assemblage of this mutant is highly interesting from the standpoint of the extremely rare frame and the somewhat uncommon slide. We imagine that some serious collector will want to have this.
