Review of WW2 Movie Dunkirk
DUNKIRK……….THE FANTASTIC WW2 MOVIE THAT I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU WATCH IN IMAX
I love watching movies, especially movies set in times of war. I have a huge collection of them from all over the world and it’s one of my passions. I’m sure that by now most of you have probably read something about the New Christopher Nolan Movie, Dunkirk, which opened last weekend with better than anticipated box office success.
I was excited to see Dunkirk and highly recommend you see it as well. If at all possible, see it in Imax or large screen format as that is the only way the film can truly be appreciated as intended. This is not a documentary and it’s not strong on dialogue but, what it does more successfully than any film since the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan, is to make you feel like you are actually a witness to history. We all have read or heard of the Terror of the German Stuka Dive Bombers, and its only after seeing this film that you can truly relate to that panic. Watching, wide-eyed, as they scream down in their steep dives bringing death to the trapped and nearly helpless soldiers on the beach. The scenes are visceral and gritty and weave in and out of the three separate aspects of land, sea and air to tell the most salient points of the evacuation which was known as Operation Dynamo. The air combat scenes are a paean to the Spitfire and the RAF. As a boater myself, the trip across the English Channel in small boats was very gut wrenching. The experience you will feel from this film is a very ground level view of what WW2 was like in 1940. It truly brings a visual sense to what it must have been like during that time.
