This is one of 5 known Remington Eddystone manufactured M-1917 Exhibition Grade Rifles that Mr. C. H. Schlacks who was at the time, General Manager of Eddystone Rifle Plant presented as thank you gifts to then United States President Woodrow Wilson, and the heads of corporations that were instrumental in the successful production of nearly 2 million rifles at the Eddystone Rifle factory in Eddytone, PA.
In late Summer of 1918, this specially produced exhibition grade rifle was presented to Mr. John A. Topping who was at the time, the President of the very famous Republic Steel Corporation, one of the firms that provided Eddystone with the raw steel to produce these rifles.
This rifle is a stunning example of what a Service Rifle could be when interpreted as a piece of 20th century industrial art. Other than the stunningly beautiful exhibition grade walnut stock, the rifle is a standard production textbook example July, 1918 production rifle with all of the correct “E” for Eddystone marked parts.
Only a very small number of these very special rifles were ever assembled; President Woodrow Wilson received serial #1 and other known examples were sent to the Chairman of Remington Arms and the President of Midvale Steel who jointly owned the Eddystone Plant. This is a MUST HAVE piece for the advanced WWI collector, and any student of America’s 20th Century Wartime Industrial output.
