IN 98% ORIGINAL MINT SHARP CONDITION, WE HAVE A REALLY NICE EXAMPLE OF AÂ WW1 ISSUED VERY EARLY PRODUCTION SERIAL NUMBER 680Â S&W M1917 REVOLVER IN 45 ACP ALONG WITH THEÂ 1917 DATED GRATON & KNIGHT MADE HOLSTER THAT ITÂ WAS ISSUED WITH AND ALSO THE ORIGINAL LANYARD.
THIS WAS ISSUED TO COLONEL EDWARD M OFFELY WHO COMMANDED THE 308TH MACHINE GUN BATTALION OF THE 78TH INFANTRY DIVISION IN FRANCE DURING WWI. THIS REVOLVER WAS ORIGINALLY A PART OF HIS MILITARY GROUPING UNTIL IT WAS SENT TO THE PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF MASSACHUSETTS. HERE IS A LINK TO THE ORIGINAL SALE OF THE GROUPING
YOU WILL NOTICE THE EARLY GROOVED HAMMER WHICH THE ARMY DID NOT LIKE AND WAS DELETED EARLY IN PRODUCTION.  THE GUN IS ALL MATCHING WITH A MINT BORE AND HAS VERY ATTRACTIVE GRIPS. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THESE WERE BETTER HANDLING REVOLVERS THAN THE COLTS; THEY JUST FIT MY HAND BETTER AND THE ACTION IS SUPERIOR. THIS IS LIKE HAVING AN ALMOST NEW 103 YEAR OLD GUN! WE SEE MANY MORE COLTS THAN THE SMITHS SO IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ONE OF THESE THIS IS A TOP EXAMPLE. THE M1917 REVOLVERS WERE HEAVILY USED IN ACTIVE SERVICE IN WWI AND RIGHT THROUGH TO THE END OF WW2. DURING WW2, THEY WERE OFTEN ISSUED TO MP’S AND THE ARTILLERY TO SPARE THE M1911’S FOR FRONT LINE COMBAT USE WITH THE INFANTRY AND ARMOR. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND VERY EARLY PRODUCTION EXAMPLE AND IT IS IN EXTREMELY HIGH MUSEUM GRADE CONDITION.
