Here in original 170 plus year old condition is an ornate, cased set of Southern 44 caliber percussion Dueling Pistols of very high grade. They are distinctively marked “S Sutherland, Richmond Virginia“. In the Civil War era, this firm was known as the “armorer of the South” and was the largest firearms concern south of the Mason Dixon Line. These pistols are in untouched condition and came out of a Plantation in Mississippi. They are in decent condition but the horn end caps of each pistol need to be replaced and the pistols do need to be conserved as well as the case. There is a tin of original Eley percussion caps and some of the original lead balls plus other accouterments.
These pistols look as if they came right off of the Calvin J. Candie Plantation in Django Unchained. They just reek of “Gone With the Wind” or “Mandigo“. You can see the glass rings on the top of the case where undoubtedly quite of few glasses of bourbon sat. I cannot tell you if these things were ever shot in anger or if anyone’s innards were tickled by them but they sure would look awesome in somebodies Study or Den.
