Description

In 97% mint condition, we have an very top example of a VERY SCARCE French Naval Issue & so Marked Mle 1892 “Lebel” Service RevolverThe revolver is marked with a French Navy Anchor Property mark on the butt and they also have a distinctive black finish to protect from the marine environment.   This was the standard French Naval Officer’s Service side arm from 1892 until well past the end of WW2 although it was being augmented in the late 1930’s with the FN Model 1922  The Pistol was heavily used during the WW2 era by the French Military, the Resistance, and it was also reissued by the Germans who captured vast quantities in 1940. One could think of no better pistol to represent the French Resistance movement during the time of the Nazi Occupation of France.  This is a wonderful example of a French Naval Service pistol at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 and again in 1939.

During WWI the French Navy played a significant role in operations in the Mediterranean,. supporting the Gallipoli operations and other endeavors against the Naval forces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.   Naval marked pistols are not common as the Naval service was always much smaller branch that required fewer arms.
