Here’s one of the hardest WWII M1 Carbines to locate. In excellent mint condition we have an extremely rare example of a totally original Irwin Peterson made M1 Carbine…This carbine has an Irwin-Pedersen marked receiver and was assembled by Saginaw S’G’ (Grand Rapids) in 1943. Perhaps most importantly, it’s an original carbine…NOT A RESTORATION that has been “put back” into its correct configuration. As most M1 carbine collectors know, things did not go well for the Irwin-Pedersen Arms Co. and they failed to produce any carbines that were fully accepted by government inspectors. With several other M1 contractors coming online, the I.P. government contract was cancelled and the tooling and parts were transferred to Saginaw S’G’. Saginaw quality checked the already manufactured I.P. receivers and various components and worked them into production. This is how completed Irwin-Pedersen marked M1 Carbines eventually were accepted into military service.
Nearly all of the component parts are either I.P. or S’G’ marked and all of the parts appear to be original to this weapon. The plain/short faced mag release button is of the correct type but is unmarked and I believe it to be original to the weapon. Likewise, the buttplate is unmarked however the checkering pattern is identical to that of the IP marked buttplates and again, I believe it to be original to this weapon. Everything else is literally “text book” and the various wear patterns show me that the gun is an original. The rear sight (and leaf) are correctly marked and there are no large stake marks in the rear sight dovetail to show the gun ever had an adjustable sight. The barrel was manufactured by Underwood (the most common of the several contractors that supplied barrels to I.P./S’G’) and is properly dated 4-43. The original metal finish is in excellent shape with very little wear and I’d grade it 95-96% overall. The high wood stock is in excellent overall condition with some normal handling marks. There are no cracks or chips and the wood does not appear to have been sanded or refinished. The original circled-P proof is clearly visible on the bottom of the pistol grip, the original boxed S’G’ and crossed cannons acceptance appear on the right side of the butt, and the sling slot is correctly marked “IR-IP”. There are no marks in the stock nose or shadow on the barrel that would indicate a wide band/bayo lug was ever installed and the front sight does not appear to have ever been removed.
It is estimated that fewer than 25,000 Irwin-Pedersen receivers were manufactured, making them the single rarest of the eleven M1 Carbine prime contractor marked receivers.
In a world full of IP parts assembled guns this stands out as the genuine article as an INVESTMENT GRADE Irwin-Pedersen M1 Carbine!
