In 95% very sharp condition, we have an extremely rare US Coast Guard marked and issued Colt Official Police revolver in .38 Special. This revolver was shipped to Joseph Lorch Colts Washington DC representative on December 7, 1937. The gun was sent to the Coast Guard Depot at Curtis Bay Maryland as part of a very small 25 gun shipment. The revolver is matching with a mint bore as well.
I cannot overstate how rare Coast Guard Issued side arms are, especially from this time period. The Coast Guard is a very small branch of Service especially prior to WWII. This pistol would have been in service at the outbreak of war in 1941 and would have been in the thick of fighting during the U-Boat war off the east coast of the United States. The coast guard was heavily involved in Amphibious Naval operations during WWII and participated in the D-Day landing in Normandy. Very few Coast Guard issued side arms have ever turned up from the WWII era and this is an almost unique opportunity to obtain a gun which clearly is a major part of our naval history.
Scotty’s Collector Insight…Coast Guard issued WWII era handguns are just never seen. I cannot imagine to many guns from this 25 gun shipment are still in existence but I’m sure it’s just a very few.
