Right at the onset of WWI in August of 1914, The French realized that they would need a large amount of small arms to equip the Army that was being mobilized against the Germans. They immediately looked to Spain for handguns in the Northwest part of the country where there was a long established weapons industry. One design was selected a 7.65mm (.32 auto) based upon the FN Model 1903. It was made by Gabilondo y Urresti and was called the Ruby Pistol. Many other firms also were contracted to produce this type of pistol. Some firms produced a good pistol, while other makers churned out pretty sketchy product. Only one maker really produced a high grade well made and quality pistol and that was the Firm that was known today as Astra. The original design was known as the Model 1915 and was the Pistol that really started it all for them, however the design was further perfected and was called the Model 1916, which is what our example is. If you want a French WWI Ruby pistol and you want the best, you find an Astra.
