They were also popular with German target shooters and hunters who were allowed to purchase a pistol along with a long arm when they obtained their hunting license. Back in this Pre WWII era Ammunition was much more expensive than it is now a days; rimfire ammunition was much more affordable, making a pistol in this caliber very useful for the average Johann.
