In excellent very sharp condition, we have a very attractive Erfurt Arsenal 1915 manufactured Kar 98az Carbine That has the Weimar Army “1920” date property stamp and is Early Nazi Era Su26 proofed and Droop Eagle proofed from Spandau Arsenal. Of course this is totally matching down to the screws though there are a few reworked parts as you wuld expect. The bore is mint. The stock is a golden walnut, not the dried up looking late war Beech that was used and the cartouches are just wonderful to look at. Clearly this rifle made it through 2 World Wars relatively intact. The extremely rare muzzle cover is even numbered to this rifle!
This rifle would have been used in service with an Artillery Unit during WWI, we can tell this from the unit marking on the stock disc. After WWI it remained in the Army and received the 1920 property stamp of the Reichswehr. Sometime in the early 1930’s it went to the Spandau Depot for an overhaul. These rifles stayed in service during WWII and were heavily used by the Nazi Police Apparatus. This is the classic German police rifle of the interwar years.
The model 98az was the standard carbine in use by the German Army at the time and it was the for runner of the later 98k. These rifles featured the 98 “small ring action” and many were turned into custom rifles because of the sleek design. Today, finding and original matching rifle is a real score and this mint example would be the pride of any German Mauser collection.
