Description

In 98% mint crisp condition, we have an example of the very well known lightweight pistol experiments that Colt did in 1950 to find a possible replacement for the Colt Model 1911a1 US Army Service Pistol.  These pistols are fitted with aluminum alloy frames and are a joy to handle.  There was some talk at the time of a modernized Army/Air Force Service Pistol and Colt did produce some 6-8 lightweight pistols.  The factory information states that they were all original in 9mm caliber but they were also chambered in .45 acp and as this example is, in .38 Super.

Although this never went any further in development with the Military, these pistols became the prototypes for the Colt Lightweight Commander.  Today the 4-5 survivors of these experiments are ensconced in advanced Colt Collections.  This one has just been made available for sale.
