In 98% mint crisp condition, we have an example of the very well known lightweight pistol experiments that Colt did in 1950 to find a possible replacement for the Colt Model 1911a1 US Army Service Pistol. These pistols are fitted with aluminum alloy frames and are a joy to handle. There was some talk at the time of a modernized Army/Air Force Service Pistol and Colt did produce some 6-8 lightweight pistols. The factory information states that they were all original in 9mm caliber but they were also chambered in .45 acp and as this example is, in .38 Super. Â
Although this never went any further in development with the Military, these pistols became the prototypes for the Colt Lightweight Commander. Today the 4-5 survivors of these experiments are ensconced in advanced Colt Collections. This one has just been made available for sale.
