This is what I call the “little old Lady Special” because that is exactly where this came from. We have a 1971 vintage Model 61-3 Smith & Wesson 5 shot .22lr purse or pocket pistol with the original carry pouch.
When the gun control act of 1968 became Law, the importation of small sized pistols was banned. In response to this Smith & Wesson Developed this pistol. It was announced in 1968 but it did not actually become available until 1970. The early models of this pistol had reliability issues that were resolved in the dash 2 & 3 versions but this was not a commercially successful product. It was marketed as a ladies purse gun at a time that ladies were not putting guns in purses like they are these days. Today these obscure pistols are highly sought after by Smith collectors.
