In combat carried been there done that condition, we have a very scarce & important R.F. Sedgley re-worked USMC ISSUED Colt Model 1911 Service Pistol. Sedgley overhauled Colt 1911 Pistols for the Marine Corps sometime during the 1930’s. They are identified by the “Circle S” marking that can be found on either the slide or the frame. Aside from the small number of 1911’s delivered by Colt to the Marines, this is the only other DEFINITIVE way to identify a USMC ISSUED 1911 pistol.
This pistol was manufactured by Colt and shipped to France in 1918 and is the “Black Army” variant. After the war some of these pistols found their way to the Marine’s Philadelphia Depot. The rebuilding was outsourced to Sedgley whose firm was located almost next to the depot. Sedgley also did extensive work on many other USMC small arms as well, notably 1903 Springfield Rifles.
Sedgley marked USMC issued Colts are extremely scarce; not many were actually overhauled and few of those survived WWII. When war broke out in 1941 these pistols and not the more modern 1911A1’s were what sat in the Marines Armories. When the Marines Landed on Guadalcanal in August 1942, this is exactly the pistol that would have been carried. If you are looking for a Pacific war USMC CARRIED 1911 pistol this an iconic example of what they actually carried in harm’s way. I CANT SAY IT ANY PLANER THAN THIS; THIS PISTOL WAS MARINE ISSUED AND CARRIED DURING ALL THAT HELLACIOUS ISLAND FIGHTING.
